Wanaka offers year round adventure. Both a summer and a winter destination, the region has an unparalleled selection of short hikes, day walks and wilderness adventures. With its two lakes, many rivers and big skies, Wanaka is popular for mountain biking, sailing, kayaking, fishing, paragliding, canyoning and skydiving. For those who are wanting less physical adventure and more relaxation there are wildlife cruises to the lake's island reserves, eco rafting trips on the Clutha river, winery tours or 4WD backcountry trips and magnificent scenic flights around Mt Aspiring and to Milford Sound.
The town has a special village character and the setting is stunningly beautiful, with the backdrop of the Southern Alps, two majestic alpine lakes and New Zealand's largest river, the Clutha.
From the end of June until early October, Wanaka is a ski and snowboard resort with two downhill fields, heliskiing and a x-country resort. The fields are some of the highest in the country with reliable snow, an unrivalled variety of terrain, superb views and uncrowded slopes.
